Artist Anne Mourier offers a sensitive, poetic portrayal of a woman who, in the histories of men, has been endlessly iconized and defamed.

After the death of the man she loves, a woman is forced to abandon her home. What will she bring with her? How will she remember? Moving through the ports and cities of the Mediterranean, she traverses the depths of her loss, finding moments of joy in the face of hardship. She reflects on the future, not just on her own but with the gaze of an oracle, the future that women will have to fight against. She stands and speaks truth to powerful men.

She crosses seas and walks the wildness of the earth. In her path, she reflects on the beauty in the everyday, the building of home, the care of children and the power of love. Amidst the strength of hills and the soft curves of healing waters she grows a new life. It is a land of plenty, of birth, of nurturing – the land of Cockaigne.

Very little is known about this historical character and Mourier’s twenty years of research have yielded an imaginative history. With delicate hand-painted watercolors and lyrical storytelling, Mourier traces her courageous journey. In her, we see the power of the divine Feminine which our world has not only forgotten, but actively vilified and suppressed. She reminds us of the sacredness of that which has been denied, offering this as a means of healing.
